Within the scope of sustainable development, energy conservation, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, solar heating is an interesting home heating alternative
Depending on the size of the installation and the region, solar heating can cover up to 50% of
annual heating needs. For the best possible performance, it is important the home is properly insulated and the building has good exposure to the sun.
As in all central heating systems, the installation includes:
- a boiler, in the case of a solar system, solar thermal collectors
- a pipe system that distributes heat
- a storage unit (hot water tank or concrete slab)
- heating units (radiators or heated slab depending on the installation chosen)
Because sun radiation is intermittent (absent at night or not present as long during the colder months), it is recommended to connect the solar boiler to your old boiler to use as a backup. You should know that the solar boiler also produces domestic hot water.
Cost of a solar heating system and tax incentives
A tax credit to encourage people to invest in equipment that uses renewable energy sources was implemented for purchases made between 1st January 2005 and 31st December 2009. The installation of a solar heating system therefore falls within the scope of this incentive. It means you can benefit from:
- a tax credit of 50% on the cost of materials
- a VAT rate at 5.5% (for a house built more than 2 years ago)
There are also subsidies you could take advantage of, subject to conditions of eligibility, namely from:
