Safety: verifying the conformity of your electrical wiring

conformity - electrical

Non conforming wires can be very dangerous – electrification risk or risk of house fire

How do know whether your electrical wiring is up to standard

The service date will tell you a lot.
If your wiring is more than 30 years old, it is still equipped with porcelain fuses, it is not grounded …plan to rewire very soon.
If your wiring was installed after 1991, there is a real chance it complies with safety regulations. Actually, since that date, all electrical wiring must be equipped with a 30 mA device to better protect homes.
If your wiring was installed between 1974 and 1991, be careful; have your wiring inspected to be sure it is safe.

Your electrical wiring must have :

  • electrical outlets with the ground pin
  • an electrical panel with all the circuit protection devices in one place (small divisional circuit breakers or cylindrical cartridge type fuse-outs)
  • a general circuit breaker
  • roperly attached plug-in connections and switches
