When we signed the deed of sale for our property, the Notary informed us that we would get the title of ownership at a later time. Is this legal?

ChapterQuestion – Answer

Providing the title of ownership

Yes, you have to wait a few months (usually 6) before you receive a copy of the official deed of sale.

This is normal since the Notary is required to perform many different duties both before and after the sale.

Prior to the sale, he/she consults many services: urban planning, land titles office, mortgage registry, civil status (état civil), etc.

The signature of the sale results in other administrative tasks, still performed by the Notary. The most important of which concern publication of the deed of sale at the mortgage registry and providing the buyer with the final account.

The simple copy the Notary gives you on the day you sign allows you to prove your new homeowner status and to perform the first routine formalities.
